Addition to Food Section in Healthy Living Guide

Ok, so I mentioned organic foods in my last post on healthy eating. Some people complain about the fact that organic food in more expensive. Ok, ok, so we all can't buy everything organic or go to our farmer's market every week to pick up our produce. I get it! So in response to this "problem" I thought it would be helpful to list out the most important fruits and veggies to make sure you buy organic because they are particularly prone to higher levels of pesticides/toxins. Washing your produce only removes these pesticides partially. There is a significant amount that you are still ingesting. So anyhow, this comes courtesy of the enviromental working group. (thanks guys!)
The Dirty Dozen: Peaches, apples, sweet bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, lettuce, grapes, pears, spinach, and potatoes.

Ok folks, make sure you buy these organics for sure, and if you can buy them at the local farmer's markets, even better!!

Good luck and many blessings in health,
Dr. Carri

Healthy Living Guide Part I

This is my four part healthy living guide!

FOOD: Consume less processed foods, if you have to unwrap it to eat it, think twice! This goes for fast foods as well. They are highly processed and filled with lots of fat and chemicals to make them taste good and preserve them.
When you do consume packaged/processed foods, read the labels! If you can't recognize or pronounce the ingredients, again, THINK TWICE! Especially avoid any foods with "hydrogenated oil or shortening" These are the dreaded trans-fats! The FDA allows food companies to put on their labels "0 grams of trans-fats per serving" if there is up to .5 grams of trans-fat per serving. SO, if you eat two servings you are actually consuming 1 gram of trans-fat. It has been established that there is NO SAFE consumption level of trans-fats! Those tricky food manufacturers!!

Drink Water!!! Our bodies are composed of 80% water. Our Earth is composed of 80% water, drink 80% water. A good rule of thumb to follow is to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water each day. If you weigh 180 lbs, aim for 90oz's of water per day. If you are no where near the recommended amount, try increasing slowly.

Avoid fake sugars/artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, splenda, etc (in all diet drinks and foods) Just like the chemical additives in our processed foods, we don't yet understand the possible risks in consuming these things AND chemically speaking, aspartame is basically formaldehyde. YUCK!

In choosing organic vs. non-organic foods, choose organic as much as possible. Especially with the following foods: dairy products, meat, and veggies/fruits. The pesticides, antibiotics, growth hormone, other chemicals, and genetically modified foods we consume harm us far more than we know!

Part II coming soon!

Sports Physical Season

Hi!
Did you know that your family chiropractor does sports physicals?
In most states chiropractors are licensed and qualified to offer that service.
At my office I offer a comprehensive pre-participation physical for only $25.
Many parents often tell me that the physical I perform on their child is much more complete and informative compared to visiting with their family medical doctor. Due to the nature of my regular chiropractic practice and my experience working in pediatrics, most children tend to feel very comfortable during this "doctor's visit". I will get your child in, examined, and on his/her way to practice in no time with same day appointments available.
If you know anyone that needs a physical and doesn't want to pay too much, or wait too long, have them give me a call.
I am also available on site for your child's team registration day or first day of practice for no extra charge!
